The Five Great Turnings of Fantaeryn

Every world has its oldest stories.

Some speak of mighty kings or forgotten empires. Others remember dragons, enchanted forests, or ancient magic. The oldest legend of Talmortha is different. It is the story of the world itself. It is not centred on a hero or a battle, but on the changing relationship between the living world and its peoples. At the heart of that story lies Fantaeryn, the name given to the world's deepest state of harmony and coherence. It is the ancient harmony that flows through all living things. Much of the world has forgotten it, yet many believe the day will come when it is remembered once more.

Long before the events of The Whispered Horse, before Clairvelle heard the whisper of Nyxara, the people of Talmortha believed that the world passed through great cycles of becoming. Each Turning shaped the relationship between the living world and those who dwelt within it, drawing them either closer to harmony or further from it.

The First Turning – The Age of Song

The earliest legends tell of a time when every living thing heard the Worldsong clearly. Forests, rivers, mountains, creatures, and peoples all recognised themselves as part of a greater whole. The people of Talmortha understood themselves as participants in a living world rather than observers of it. Forests were not simply collections of trees, nor were rivers merely channels of water. Every part of creation possessed meaning because every part existed in relationship with every other. Harmony was simply the natural way of being.

In many ways, modern science is beginning to rediscover this ancient intuition. Ecology reveals that forests function as complex communities, with networks of fungi connecting trees beneath the soil. Birds, insects, plants, bacteria, and mammals continually shape one another's lives in ways that no species could accomplish alone. The legends of Fantaeryn express this same truth through story rather than scientific language, reminding us that life has always flourished through relationship.

The Second Turning – The Age of Weaving

As the peoples of Talmortha flourished, each discovered its own gifts and purpose. Great civilisations arose through cooperation, with every culture contributing its own thread to the Pattern. The Elves became keepers of beauty. The Bellkeepers listened for harmony between peoples. Dragons guarded ancient wisdom, while the Sovereign Trees held the memory of the living world. Together, their unique strengths formed a tapestry that grew richer and more intricate with each passing generation.

Healthy ecosystems flourish through biodiversity, with each species playing a role that strengthens the resilience of the whole. Perhaps healthy civilisations flourish in much the same way. Diversity is more than difference; it is a source of creativity, adaptability, and resilience. In Fantaeryn, every people is at its strongest when its gifts are offered for the benefit of the whole rather than for its own glory.

The Third Turning – The Age of Separation

The Age of Separation did not arrive all at once. Like the slow widening of a river, it unfolded so gradually that few recognised it while it was happening. Kingdoms grew inward-looking, knowledge became something to possess rather than to share, and fear quietly displaced trust. People increasingly saw themselves as separate from one another and from the living world that had once sustained them. The ancient stories endured, but fewer understood the truths they carried.

Separation rarely begins with hatred. More often, it begins with forgetting. We lose sight of the relationships that sustain us. Communities become fragmented, knowledge becomes specialised, and nature is seen as a resource rather than a living partner. This is not a uniquely modern problem; every civilisation wrestles with the temptation to see itself as separate from the larger Pattern that gave it life.

The Fourth Turning – The Age of Dissonance

By the Fourth Turning, the old harmonies had faded into memory. The Bellkeepers vanished from the world. The dragons fell silent. The Sovereign Trees remained, standing as enduring witnesses to a wisdom that many believed had been lost forever.

Yet the Pattern itself had not disappeared. The world had not ceased to sing; its music was simply drowned beneath distraction, ambition, and forgetfulness. Those who still sensed its presence became few, and the ancient stories came to be regarded as little more than legends.

This is the age into which The Whispered Horse begins.

The Bellkeepers, the dragons, and the Sovereign Trees are more than symbols in a fantasy history. They represent something every civilisation needs: voices that preserve wisdom, call us back to beauty, and remind us that we belong to something greater than ourselves. When those voices fade from our lives, the world itself seems quieter, even though its song has never ceased.

The Fifth Turning

The oldest legends speak only in whispers about the Fifth Turning. Some believe it heralds the return of Fantaeryn. Others believe it begins whenever enough hearts remember their place within the living world.

Perhaps the Fifth Turning is not a single moment in history, but a gradual awakening. It begins whenever we rediscover wonder, recognise the beauty and interconnectedness of all life, and choose to live in greater harmony with the Pattern that has always been present beneath the surface of things.

That idea lies at the heart of The Whispered Horse. Beneath its adventure, its magic, and its unforgettable companions is an invitation to remember something that has never truly been lost: our relationship with the living world.

Later in the Fantaeryn series, Ariathes offers a quiet reflection that captures this beautifully:

"Many believe the Fifth Turning heralds the return of Fantaeryn."
Cadence frowned. "And does it?"
Ariathes smiled. "That depends on whether Fantaeryn is a place to which we return... or something we become."

I often wonder whether every generation is offered the opportunity to begin a new Turning. Perhaps the legends endure because they describe something that happens within every human heart as much as within every civilisation. If that is true, then the Fifth Turning is not waiting somewhere in the future. It begins each time we choose to see and protect the beauty in nature, embrace wonder, nurture relationship over separation, and seek harmony over fear.

Perhaps the world is not moving backward toward some lost golden age. Perhaps it is moving forward toward a deeper realisation of what it has always been capable of becoming.

Perhaps that is how every great story begins.

Years after I first began imagining the Great Turnings of Fantaeryn, I came to recognise that many of the same questions lay at the heart of what I now call The Living Field Hypothesis: whether life is shaped not only by individual organisms, but by the relationships between them, and what might become possible when human beings consciously choose to strengthen those relationships.
